Dear Friends,
The Gospel today presents two stories of people with great faith. The first is the synagogue official who comes to Jesus, asking for Jesus to cure his sick daughter. He has faith that if he can get Jesus to lay his hands on the child, she will be healed. The synagogue official's faith leads him to seek out Jesus.
The second person is the woman in the crowd, who also has great faith. She believes that if she can but touch the cloak of Jesus, she will be cured of her affliction. Her faith leads her to seek out Jesus too.
We could question whose faith was stronger, and who approached the Lord in the right way; the synagogue official with his formal request and straightforward approach, or the woman in the crowd with her more humble and clandestine methods.
What is important is that in both cases, Jesus meets the person where they are, responding to their request pastorally, and with compassion. Jesus always meets us where we are. The synagogue official needed to have the formal request and official home visit. That is what made sense to him. The woman in the crowd needed to have a brief encounter without fanfare. That is what made sense to her.
The point is that Jesus accepts both types of faith and works with the person regardless of who they are or where they are in their faith journey. He does the same for each of us. So, don’t be afraid to ask for his help, in whatever way makes sense to you in your faith journey. Christ always meets us where we are and gives us the help we need.
Peace,
Dcn. Steve
