For Immediate Release: Silence is Complicity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Silence is complicity. As Catholics, the leadership of Historic Saint Paul Parish, cannot remain silent in the face of the assault upon the dignity of the human person and our democracy that was perpetrated yesterday at the Capitol. We condemn vehemently the rhetoric of President Trump which incited, for four years, assaults upon black citizens, LGBTQ+ citizens, women, immigrants, families, children at the border, DREAMERS, among others.  We weep at the action of those who have enabled him, including clerics and bishops who have refused to speak out against rhetoric and policies that have assaulted the dignity of life and have now assaulted our democracy. We vow to speak up whenever rhetoric or actions seek to tear down rather than build up, demean rather than support and devalue any life rather than respect life; we ask forgiveness for our lack of words or actions that contributed to any person thinking that the Catholic Church condoned the words or actions of our president or those whose disgraceful behavior defiled the hallowed halls of our democracy.

El silencio es complicidad. Como Católicos, el liderazgo de la Histórica Parroquia de San Pablo, no puede permanecer en silencio ante el asalto a la dignidad de la persona humana y a nuestra democracia que fue perpetrada ayer en el Capitolio. Condenamos vehementemente la retórica del presidente Trump que incitó, durante cuatro años, los asaltos a ciudadanos negros, ciudadanos LGBTQ+, mujeres, inmigrantes, familias, niños en la frontera, DREAMERS, entre otros.  Lloramos por la acción de aquellos que le han permitido, incluidos clérigos y obispos que se han negado a alzar la voz contra la retórica y las políticas que han agredido la dignidad de la vida y ahora han agredido nuestra democracia. Prometemos alzar la voz cada vez que la retórica o las acciones traten de derribar en lugar de edificar, degradar en lugar de apoyar y devaluar cualquier vida en lugar de respetar la vida; pedimos perdón por nuestra falta de palabras o acciones que contribuyeron a que cualquier persona pensara que la Iglesia Católica consintió las palabras o acciones de nuestro presidente o aquellos cuyo comportamiento vergonzoso profanó los salones sagrados de nuestra democracia.
