MESSAGE OF THE WEEK
Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
March! More daylight and hopefully, warmer weather! A time to begin cultivating the soil and planting seeds that spring forth from Mother Earth reminding us of God’s tender care for all creation.
Likewise, our Readings today challenge us to do the soul cultivating that will make us a fully formed disciple of Jesus, bearing the good fruits of gospel justice and compassion.
More cultivating. As we begin the l Liturgical Season of Lent this Wednesday, the Church calls us to firmly believe that our prayer, fasting and almsgiving can really change hearts, our heart, and the heart of others. This season of Promise and Hope is our time to cultivate a soil in which our attitudes and our speech reflect respect for one another, making the world around us a loving dwelling place for all.
Praying from the heart helps us shed our prejudge toward those who seem different than us. Praying from the heart calls us to mend broken relationships with estranged family members and/or others who have hurt us, or whom we have hurt
Fasting is more than losing weight. Fasting not only from our favorite food but also fasting from noise and unnecessary chatter can help us hear the whispering of God within and around us.
Almsgiving connects us with the human suffering that we see daily on the evening news, in our family, on the city street and in shelters. Filling our Rice Bowl to overflowing provides food and medical help to people living in war-torn areas of our world. Even more importantly, our sacrificial giving fills lonely hearts with hope, knowing that someone cares for them.
This Wednesday, as Blessed Ashes are placed on your forehead ask Jesus to cultivate within you a heart that reflects His caring heart.
